July: Month of Many Observances!

July is a month of many different national observances, there is quite a list of them!  And because I mostly enjoy the ones about food, here it goes:

  • Eggplant and Lettuce Month
  • Mango and Melon Month
  • National Blueberries Month
  • National Grilling Month
  • National Ice Cream Month
  • National Horseradish Month
  • National Hot Dog Month
  • Nectarine and Garlic Month
  • Sandwich Generation Month
  • National Baked Bean Month
  • Lasagna Awareness Month
  • National Culinary Arts Month
  • National Picnic Month
  • National Pickle Month

Phew!

According to the International Dairy Foods Association, in 1984, President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of the month as National Ice Cream Day. He recognized ice cream as a fun and nutritious (ha!) food that is enjoyed by a full 90 percent of the nation’s population. In the proclamation, President Reagan called for all people of the United States to observe these events with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.”

Now, in leu of President Reagan’s proclamation, summer, and July being National Ice Cream Month, here’s a frozen yogurt recipe that is delicious for the heat wave that has come over Chicago.

Honey Ginger Plum Sundae

  • 2 red or purple plums, pitted and chopped
  • 2 Tbsp orange juice
  • 1 Tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, minced
  • 1/8 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 cup vanilla frozen yogurt
  • 2 Tbsp chopped almonds or pistachios
  1. In a blender or food processor, combine plumbs, orange juice, honey, ginger, and cardamom until thoroughly mixed but still chunky.
  2. Divide frozen yogurt among serving bowls and top each with plum mixture and sprinkle with nuts.

Makes 2 servings.  Per serving: 200 kcal, 6 g fat (1.5 g sat), 36 g carb, 35 mg sodium, 2 g fiber, 4 g protein.
