A small glimpse of our Fall meeting

The Chicago Dietetic Association focused on vitamin D for their Fall meeting titled, “What might be the health of the U.S. population if we all had enough vitamin D?” Our speaker, Dr. Robert P. Heaney, MD, FACP, FACN was brilliant. He had the crowd laughing and learning at the same time.

Overall it was a great night and I hope success can be seen in our photos.

Health endpoints for vitamin D were reviewed. These involve not only the calcium economy, but immune competence, cardiovascular endpoints, Type I diabetes, metabolic syndrome, fall propensity, and cancer prevention. The prevalence of suboptimal vitamin D status in the population was also presented. The portion of the burden of the disorders listed due to vitamin D deficiency was estimated. Optimal vitamin D levels were suggested along with the intakes needed to achieve them.
